| The National Archive of the Republic of Moldova houses over a million valuable documents: manuscripts, images, maps, printed books, and personal archives chronicling Moldova’s history from the Middle Ages to the present day. A significant portion of these materials relates to Jewish history, reflecting Moldova’s long and rich Jewish heritage. While the Archive’s catalogues are generally well-organized, our years of experience have revealed the challenges in identifying Jewish-related content within these thematic and chronological systems. This project represents an ongoing process rather than a final result. We are working to translate the Archive’s catalogues into English, with special attention to Jewish components. The institution of the Bessarabian Residency was established in accordance with the decree of the Governing Senate on January 15, 1816 as a body of local police administration. At its head was a plenipotentiary resident, who was the head of the local administration and police, he exercised general supervision over the entire
administration and justice apparatus. The institution of the residency was suspended by Tsar’s decree of 29
February 29, 1828. Bessarabia was included in the government of Novorussia on the basis of with the Novorossian governments.
